چکیده

A transient one-dimensional model of the vertical movement of water and salt in the mangrove root zone is investigated. This is an extension of a previous steady state model which assumed that the ability of the mangrove roots to take up water is uniformly distributed throughout the soil and that the root water uptake is reduced if there is nonzero salt concentration around the roots. We show how both the time dependent and steady state salinity prooles in the soil depend on the strength of the root water uptake, the depth of the root zone and the porosity of the soil. The withdrawal of fresh water by the mangrove roots leads to salinization of the soil in the root zone, and signiicant reduction of the transpiration of the mangroves. When a steady state is reached, the salt that is excluded by the mangrove roots must diiuse back to the surface against the ow of soil water towards the roots. For a root zone of nite depth, a nite diierence numerical scheme is used to investigate the rate of salinization of the root zone, and the diiusion of salt into the region below the root zone. Note: Work partially carried out under project MAS 1.3 "Partial Diierential Equations in Porous Media Research".

How Mangroves Salinize the Soil

We consider both stationary and time dependent versions of a model describing the vertical movement of water and salt in a porous medium in which a continuous extraction of water takes place (by the roots of mangroves). The problem is formulated in terms of a coupled system of partial diierential equations for the salt concentration and the water ow which generalizes previous models. We study t...

How mangrove forests adjust to rising sea level.

Mangroves are among the most well described and widely studied wetland communities in the world. The greatest threats to mangrove persistence are deforestation and other anthropogenic disturbances that can compromise habitat stability and resilience to sea-level rise. To persist, mangrove ecosystems must adjust to rising sea level by building vertically or become submerged. Mangroves may direct...

Mangroves as a major source of soil carbon storage in adjacent seagrass meadows

Mangrove forests have the potential to export carbon to adjacent ecosystems but whether mangrove-derived organic carbon (OC) would enhance the soil OC storage in seagrass meadows adjacent to mangroves is unclear. In this study we examine the potential for the contribution of mangrove OC to seagrass soils on the coast of North Sulawesi, Indonesia. We found that seagrass meadows adjacent to mangr...

Coastal saline acid sulphate soils with aquaculture and mangroves: a case study in Hochiminh city environs

Hochiminh City environs have more than 45,000 ha of coastal plain soils which to be continued to the South by the great mangrove forest in Camau peninsula. How to protect and afforest mangroves successfully on these soils when using them also for aquaculture (shrimp, fish, crab, mollusc, etc.)? An answer to this question is now urgently needed. Dealing with the study on soil genesis/ geography ...

Crab biodiversity under different management schemes of mangrove ecosystems

Reforestation is one of the Philippines’ government efforts to restore and rehabilitate degraded mangrove ecosystems. Although there is recovery of the ecosystem in terms of vegetation, the recovery of closely-linked faunal species in terms of community structure is still understudied. This research investigates the community structure of mangrove crabs under two different management schemes: p...
